After the warm up, we did a quick activity to test whether or not you know your 3D shapes.  Do you know, without looking anywhere, what the following shapes look like?  Since I did this orally in class, I also tested to see if you could spell these names.
Triangular based prism; rectangular based prism; square based prism; square based pyramid; cube; sphere; cylinder; cone.
Can you identify the important dimensions for these shapes?
Compare and contrast what you drew and wrote with what the EQAO formula sheet presents.  How are they different?  How are they the same?

We began our lesson today with a scenario, using the door as our reference point.  After we completed the lesson, we investigated and applied our understanding with the TI Graphing Calculator and the motion detector.  Your classmates also had a chance to work in pairs and "Match the Graph" for themselves.  You, too, will have an opportunity to try the calculator on Monday.

Today, we needed to take some time and reflect on our communication skills in math.  We looked at C2 as previously assigned and agreed that reading the question, understanding the question and then planning an answer are key steps to being successful.  A coherent answer is proof that you know what you are talking about!

Our lesson today was set up to mimic the steps to take when answering a communication task:

Absent today? Wednesday, March 1, 2017.

Today, March 1, we also took 5 minutes to do a mad minutes to drill monomials x monomials and monomials/monomials.  Take some time to practice!!!
Absent today?  Thursday, February 23, 2017.

NOTE:  Page 134 #5d)  The expression is made of 1 term with 2 variables.  So, the degree of this term is 2 + 4 = 6.  Same with #5e) where the term is made of 2 variables.  So the degree is 5.
Try 5f)!

And on page 135, #6d) is a binomial.  The first term has a degree of 3+2=5 and the second term has a degree of 2 + 5 = 7.  The degree for the BINOMIAL is the largest degree  and in this case, it is 7.  Try 6e).
